Bilbao, Spain

Sebas Velasco (b. 1988, Burgos) is a Spanish painter who works in oil and on walls with the same subject: the European periphery after dark. Streetlight on a parked car, a lit window, a young person in a tracksuit looking straight back at the viewer — painted with a realist's attention but lit like a film still. He came out of the Spanish graffiti scene of the early 2000s and moved to Bilbao to study Fine Art at the UPV/EHU, where he still lives.
Since the mid-2010s much of the work has been made in the former Yugoslavia — Belgrade, Sarajevo, Čačak — among modernist housing blocks and the cars that outlived the state that built them. He has also painted in Rabat, Ingolstadt, Oskarshamn, Beaumont in Texas, and Brixton in south London, where A Lasting Place was made for the 2024 London Mural Festival.
In Covilhã he painted Hoy es el Futuro for the sixth WOOL in June 2019.
A young Brixton resident leans back against a concrete railing at the end of Cobbett Street, lit from behind by the warm glow of the railway station against a cool south London night. Painted for the 2024 London Mural Festival, it is Velasco's usual subject transposed: the pause before a train, treated with the seriousness normally reserved for a portrait commission.

Painted for the Beaumont Mural Festival in east Texas: a young man in classic sportswear against a sprawling night cityscape, the Gulf Coast standing in for the European periphery Velasco usually paints, and lit the same way.

A Citroën BX — the boxy 1980s saloon that outlived the decade that produced it and is still working in half the countries Velasco paints in — given the scale of a monument on a Rabat wall.

Alenar — to breathe, in Valencian. A wall in the textile town of Ontinyent, in the Vall d'Albaida.

Na Putu — on the way. A mural in Čačak, in central Serbia, from the years Velasco spent working through the former Yugoslavia among modernist housing blocks and the cars that outlasted the state that built them.

A Baltic harbour town in Småland, painted in the same register as a Balkan housing estate — ordinary people, ordinary cars, artificial light doing all the work.

Painted between 1 and 10 June 2019 for the sixth edition of WOOL — Covilhã Arte Urbana, where Velasco was one of four artists invited to work from the town's own identity. A young woman from Covilhã holds the wall against a night street, paired on the adjoining facade with a circular painting of a neighbourhood garage and a red car, both in the artist's streetlight palette.
