About

Francisco Fonseca, who signs francis.co, is a Portuguese illustrator from Paço de Sousa whose subject is buildings — and, through them, the people who lived in them. He draws in dense, patient hatching, the way an etcher would, and then scales it onto a facade without thinning the line. Roofs, chimneys, tiled fronts and stacked windows accumulate into something closer to a family portrait than a townscape.

His Covilhã mural Fiação, painted at the eleventh WOOL in June 2022, wraps a curved wall in the town's textile mills: sawtooth roofs, ranks of factory windows, a chimney and a star. The same instinct runs through Amarantina in Amarante, Entrelinhas in Valongo, and his 2025 tribute to Camilo Castelo Branco in Porto.

Tributo a Camilo Castelo Branco

2025

A tribute to Camilo Castelo Branco, the nineteenth-century novelist of northern Portugal, whose Amor de Perdição was written in the Cadeia da Relação in Porto. Fonseca draws him the way he draws houses — through the fabric of the place rather than by portrait alone.

Amarantina

2024

A facade in Amarante drawn the way the artist draws everything — in dense, patient hatching, building and rebuilding the town out of roofs, chimneys and stacked windows until the wall becomes a portrait of the people who filled them.

Entrelinhas

2023

Entrelinhas — between the lines. A Valongo facade built entirely from hatching, where the drawing's own line-work is the subject as much as the buildings it describes.

Porto Walls

2023

Porto rendered in the artist's hatched line: granite fronts, tiled facades and the tight stacking of a city built down a hillside, drawn at the scale of the buildings themselves.

Fiação

Fiação

2022

Painted at the 11th WOOL — Covilhã Arte Urbana, 11–19 June 2022. A curved wall wrapped in the town's textile mills, drawn in dense hatching: sawtooth roofs, ranks of factory windows, a chimney and a star on a gable. Fiação means spinning.
