ESTAU turns ten, and Estarreja counts a hundred works
Estarreja's urban art festival runs 12 to 20 September, a decade after it started. Ten artists are painting, and the town's permanent collection is already close to a hundred pieces.

Lisbon, Portugal

Tiago Galo is a Portuguese illustrator based in Lisbon. He trained as an architect at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and worked in the profession before returning to drawing; the architecture is still legible in the work, which builds figures out of circles, wedges and hard flat colour and holds them in careful balance.
He won best comic at Amadora BD in 2011, and has since illustrated for Google, the BBC, Vogue, Amazon and Penguin Random House. The move to exterior walls has cost the work nothing: at that scale the deadpan comic timing simply becomes public.
His 2020 mural in Covilhã puts the town's wind band across a long wall in slate blue, black and orange. He has also painted for ESTAU in Estarreja and in Angra do Heroísmo, in the Azores.

The town's wind band across a long wall in slate blue, black and orange — a drummer, a trumpeter and a conductor's fist built from circles and wedges. Signed TIAGO GALO 2020.
Good condition

Painted for ESTAU in 2018 on the low wall beside the parish church at Largo Doutor Egas Moniz, in Pardilhó. Four panels for four trades this parish lived on: boatbuilding, weaving, the bunho reed mats still made here, and tamancos, the wooden clogs. Galo works in flat red, blue, black and white, and draws the hands doing the work larger than the people doing it.
Condition unknown
A wall on Rua da Boa Nova, in the old town of Angra do Heroísmo, in the illustrator's flat geometric register.
