Fernando Tordo (born in Lisbon, 29 March 1948) is one of the central figures of Portuguese popular music of the last fifty years — a singer and composer who has moved between fado, música ligeira and the intervention song of the 1970s without ever settling in one of them.
He won the Festival RTP da Canção and represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 1973 with Tourada, finishing tenth. The song, like much of his best-known work, was written with the poet José Carlos Ary dos Santos; their partnership produced a songbook that other singers have been recording ever since, including Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Ana Moura, Carminho and Dulce Pontes.
He was made a Commander of the Order of Merit in 2003, and continues to perform and record — most recently revisiting six decades of his own compositions with the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa.
