About

Capicua is the stage name of Ana Matos Fernandes, a rapper, lyricist and writer from Porto, born there and still based there, whose songs are known for their emotional precision and political bite. A sociologist by training, she came up through hip hop in the 2000s and has spent the years since treating rap as a militant craft rather than a genre to be softened for the mainstream.

Two mixtapes (Capicua Goes Preemo, 2008; Capicua Goes West, 2013) led to the self-titled debut LP in 2012 and Sereia Louca in 2014. Madrepérola (2020) won the Prémio José Afonso and the PLAY award for Best Female Artist the following year. The live EP Encore (2021) and the 2025 album Um gelado antes do fim do mundo followed. Alongside her own records she has made children's music with the Mão Verde project, and the Luso-Brazilian collaboration Língua Franca (2017) with Emicida, Rael and Valete.

She writes lyrics for other singers (Gisela João, Clã, Aline Frazão, Ana Bacalhau, the whole of Aldina Duarte's Metade-Metade) and has published three books, including the chronicle-and-poem collection Aquário (2022). Community workshops sit alongside the records; so does a long stint as a columnist, first at Visão and now at the Jornal de Notícias.

In February 2026 she announced a second pregnancy (O mundo todo na barriga). Live concerts may be quieter for a while.
