Beja, Portugal
Mafalda Vasques is a fado singer from Beja, and one of the clearest links between the city's festival programming and its own musical life.
She started singing at eight in the youth choir of the Igreja do Carmo and went on to study at the Conservatório Regional do Baixo Alentejo — music theory, piano, history of music, choir, vocal technique and Portuguese guitar. Fado took over at twelve and never let go, though she trained and works as a nurse alongside it.
She won the Sons do Fado competition in Lagoa, and in 2023 reached the final of The Voice Portugal on RTP as part of Sara Correia's team, finishing fourth. She performs regularly around Beja and the Alentejo, moving between fado and the region's own cante alentejano.
