Júlio Resende

Júlio Resende (born 10 June 1982 in Faro) is a pioneering Portuguese pianist and composer renowned for creating a unique musical language that bridges the traditional world of Fado with the improvisational freedom of Jazz.

Starting his career in the jazz scene, Resende has evolved into one of Portugal's most international musical ambassadors, releasing over ten albums that explore genres ranging from classical music and electronic to pop-rock and spoken word.

The "Fado-Jazz" Innovation

Resende is most famous for his "Fado-Jazz" concept, where he integrates the Portuguese guitar and the emotional depth of Fado with the structures of a jazz piano trio.

Amália por Júlio Resende

In 2013, Resende released the critically acclaimed album "Amália por Júlio Resende", a solo piano tribute to the "Diva of Fado," Amália Rodrigues.

One of the album's most significant achievements was the track "Medo," where Resende was granted rare permission to feature a recording of Amália's original voice, creating an "impossible duet" between his piano and the legendary singer. This album earned him the Choc Disc 5-star rating from the French magazine CLASSICA.

Artistic Versatility

Resende's career is marked by constant experimentation:

  • Alexander Search: A pop-rock project inspired by the English poetry of Fernando Pessoa, blending indie and electronic influences.
  • Cinderella Cyborg: An exploration of the relationship between man and machine, mixing acoustic piano with electronic pads and synths.
  • Poesia Homónima: A collaboration with psychiatrist Júlio Machado Vaz, merging spoken word poetry with piano improvisation.
  • Sons of Revolution: His 2023 release celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, continuing his exploration of Fado-Jazz on the prestigious ACT label.

Impact & Style

Júlio Resende's style is defined by freedom. He famously avoids strict labels, stating that he prefers to move between Fado and Jazz without choosing one, allowing the music to remain fluid and evolving. His ability to "make the piano sing Fado" has redefined the role of the instrument in traditional Portuguese music.

Júlio Resende continues to perform on major international stages, proving that the roots of Portuguese tradition can provide a limitless foundation for modern improvisation.
