Padre Guilherme is a Catholic priest who plays techno, and he does not treat those as two jobs. He is the parish priest of Laundos and Amorim, in Povoa de Varzim, and he turns up to festivals in a clerical collar, plays a full set, and builds it towards something devotional. The novelty is the first thing anybody writes about him. It stops being the point about twenty minutes in.

It started as a way to pay off a debt

Guilherme Peixoto was born in Guimaraes on 31 July 1974 and ordained in 1999, in the Archdiocese of Braga. He has also served as a military chaplain with the Portuguese Army, on deployments to Kosovo and Afghanistan.

The music starts somewhere much less cinematic. He took over the parish of Sao Miguel de Laundos in 2006 and inherited it heavily in debt. His answer was to open a bar beside the chapel on Monte de Sao Felix, Ar de Rock, staffed by volunteers from the parish, and to run karaoke nights in it to raise money. He got interested in the mixing, bought equipment a piece at a time, and taught himself the rest. Twenty years later he is still the resident DJ there.

Lockdown, and then Parque Tejo

The audience arrived during the pandemic, when he began streaming sets from the parish that put electronic music next to religious and folk records, for a congregation that could not physically gather. Those went viral.

World Youth Day Lisbon, in 2023, made it national. He played at dawn at Parque Tejo, on the morning of the closing mass, waking a crowd in the hundreds of thousands, and by the end of that week he was the priest who DJs rather than a curiosity from the internet.

Since then

The bookings have gone both ways at once. In November 2025 he played an outdoor set in front of St Elizabeth's Cathedral in Kosice, Slovakia, marking the archbishop's 75th birthday, with a video message from Pope Leo XIV. In August 2026 he closed the main stage at Untold, in Romania, reported as the first Portuguese artist to do it. He also played Buenos Aires in April 2026 to a crowd put at more than 120,000.

Live

He headlines the first edition of Cascais Fest Pela Paz on Praia de Carcavelos on 19 September 2026, as the edition's ambassador. On 28 November 2026 he plays Live Las Ventas, inside the Madrid bullring, for the promoter Rebels.
