Moth Club is an intimate music venue and bar occupying a former 1960s working men's club in Hackney — the Old Trades Hall of the Electrical Trades Union on Valette Street. Rather than erasing its past, the venue has preserved the building's retro character almost entirely: velvet curtains, a glittering mirrored disco ball, vintage lighting, and the faded grandeur of a room that once hosted union socials and dances. This layering of working-class history with contemporary indie and alternative programming is what makes Moth Club distinctly itself.
Since opening in 2014, it has become one of Hackney's most loved small venues, consistently booking the kinds of bands and artists that sit just below mainstream radar — emerging acts, touring international artists on their way up, and established names who want to play somewhere genuinely intimate. Its capacity of around 300 means that almost any show feels close and personal, and the venue has a reputation for sounding unusually good for its size.

Moth Club is located on Valette Street, a quiet side street off Morning Lane in Hackney Central. This part of Hackney sits between the more intensely gentrified pockets of Broadway Market and London Fields to the south, and the older residential streets to the north. The venue occupies a position in the neighbourhood that feels embedded rather than placed — it's the kind of place you might walk past dozens of times before noticing it from the outside, which suits its character.
Moth Club runs shows most Thursday through Saturday evenings, with occasional midweek events. Doors typically open at 19:00 with support acts from 19:30 and headliners between 20:30 and 21:30. The bar operates a full drinks service throughout, and the relaxed atmosphere in the entrance area makes it easy to arrive early and settle in.
Tickets usually range between £8 and £18 for most shows. Some club nights and DJ events run later into the night. The venue also hosts private hire events, which can occasionally affect availability on certain dates.
The main hall is a single rectangular room with the stage at one end, a long bar running one side, and standing space throughout. The low ceiling, curtained walls, and the original decorative details of the former social club create an unusual warmth — it feels more like a 1960s dance hall than a contemporary music venue, which is entirely the point.
Sound quality at Moth Club is consistently noted by touring artists as a pleasant surprise for a venue of its size. The mix sits clearly in the room, the low-end is controlled, and the room shape avoids the acoustic issues common in similar spaces. For any band playing it for the first time, it tends to become a venue they want to return to.
