The George Tavern is one of London's most historically layered alternative venues — a Victorian pub dating back to the 1820s that has survived slum clearances, wartime bombing, and a near-demolition in 2009 to remain one of the East End's most authentic cultural spaces. Located on Commercial Road in Stepney Green, it is run by Pauline Forster, who has turned it into a fiercely independent venue for live music, theatre, cabaret, spoken word, comedy, and experimental performance.
What makes The George Tavern distinct is precisely its refusal to become polished or commercial. The stage occupies an intimate back room, the décor is faded and layered with history, and the programming reflects a genuine commitment to underground and emerging culture rather than safe mainstream bookings. It attracts artists at the edges — post-punk bands, folk singers, drag performers, scratch theatre productions — and the audience tends to be local and loyal rather than tourist-facing.
The venue was nearly demolished as part of a residential development in 2009 and 2011. A major campaign involving musicians, artists, and community groups eventually forced a rethink from the council. That fight gave The George Tavern an almost mythic status in London's independent music community and cemented its place as something worth defending.

The front section functions as a traditional pub.
