Music Box

Musicbox closed on 15 September 2025, after nineteen years under the railway arch on Rua Nova do Carvalho, in Cais do Sodré. This page is kept as a record of it. The people who ran it opened Casa Capitão in Beato four days later.

For most of those nineteen years it was the room that mattered for anything left of centre in Lisbon. It worked as a hybrid, a concert hall early and a club late, and the programming ran across electronic music, indie, hip hop and things that did not sit neatly in any of them. It booked acts before they were obvious, which is the only real test of a venue.

It also predated the street it became famous on. Rua Nova do Carvalho was painted pink in 2011 and turned into a destination; Musicbox had been there since 2006, and spent its last years as the serious room on a street that had become something else entirely.

The arch is quiet now. What the venue actually was continues in Beato, under a different name and in a much bigger building.
