The Teatro Municipal da Covilhã is the town's main stage for concerts, theatre and cinema, and the anchor of its cultural programme.
The building is the Teatro-Cine da Covilhã, designed by Raul Rodrigues de Lima and completed in 1954 on the site of the Theatro Calleya of 1899. The municipality acquired it outright in 2011 and reopened it on 12 November 2021 after a long restoration. A 1954 tapestry by João Tavares survives on the main staircase.
The main auditorium seats 600, with a foyer and multi-use rooms used for workshops, rehearsals and open sessions. The building also houses an incubator for cultural and creative industries, which hosts artist residencies.
The theatre's roof terrace works as an open-air stage through the summer, looking out over the town and the Serra da Estrela. It is the home of MIRADOR — Concertos no Terraço do TMC, a Thursday-evening concert cycle. The terrace is part of the theatre, not a separate venue.
R. Rui Faleiro 1, 6200-505 Covilhã — telephone 275 330 690. The theatre is run by the Câmara Municipal da Covilhã.
